Livestock in settlement areas

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

Livestock is generally prohibited in all settlement areas including the urban areas of Belmore, Fordwich, Gorrie, Lakelet, and Wroxeter. This includes the keeping of chickens/poultry in settlement areas.

Livestock includes dairy, beef, swine, poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks), horses, goats, sheep, rabbits, fur-bearing animals, deer and elk, game animals, birds, and other animals identified in Table 1 of the Provincial Minimum Distance Separation formulae: The Minimum Distance Separation (MDS) Document, Publication 853 (ontario.ca)

There are two exceptions to the general prohibition:

  1. In accordance with the non-conforming use provisions in section 14 and 15 of the Township's Zoning By-law.
  2. Where horses are used as the primary means of transportation for the occupants of the dwelling, a maximum of 2 horses may be kept.
