Extreme Heat

When a heat warning is issued, it is advised to:

  • Drink lots of cool water
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Limit outdoor activities to morning and evening hours
  • Stay in air conditioned places

Seniors and young children are particularly at risk during heat and smog-related weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to call and check on family, friends and neighbours to make sure they are okay and staying hydrated. Isolated adults and seniors are at a greater risk of suffereing from heat-related illness.

Cooling Centres and Locations

During a Heat Event, the following community centres will be available as cooling centres:

Howick Community Centre (45088 Harriston Road, Gorrie)

  • Hours - 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Howick Optimist Pool  (2046 James Street, Gorrie)

  • Monday to Friday 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • Monday to Friday 7:00 p.m. to 8:10 p.m.
  • Saturday & Sunday 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Gorrie Splash Pad (2046 James Street, Gorrie)

  • The Splash Pad is open daily 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
