Howick Community Daycare Planning Committee
Applications are now being accepted for Howick Residents interested in joining a volunteer planning committee for a Daycare Facility in Howick!
As announced in December 2022, beginning in 2023, the Ministry of Education has shifted childcare expansion from open enrolment to a directed growth plan to create new childcare spaces. A directed growth approach will ensure funding is available to support new spaces in communities most in need of access to high-quality, affordable childcare.
As the service system manager, the County of Huron has developed a five-year directed growth plan that aligns with provincial directives and space targets while meeting the needs of communities across the region, particularly in underserved, remote and rural communities. As part of Huron County’s ongoing commitment to address these service gaps, the current plan proposes the development of additional childcare spaces in Howick Township. Howick has been recognized as one of the remote communities with emerging childcare needs due to population growth and limited access to existing childcare services.
At the July 15, 2025 Regular Council Meeting, Howick Council passed a motion approving the creation of a childcare centre planning committee comprised of township staff, 1-2 members of Council and 3-5 members of the public to determine the feasibility and sustainability of a licenced childcare centre in Howick, and to begin developing a business plan and a facility drawings.
The funding requirement to complete construction by year end 2026 gives Howick a short window of time if we want to make this centre a reality!
