Curbside Garbage & Recycling Pickup

Updated: Oct 21, 2026

The Township of Howick is pleased to announce that, beginning in 2027, residents will have the option to request an additional 64-gallon waste cart for their property.

This program is being offered as part of the Township's five-year waste collection agreement with Waste Management and is intended to assist households requiring additional waste collection capacity.

Program Details:

  • Cost: $200.00 + HST for the additional waste cart, with an applicable annual fee invoiced each January.
  • Eligibility: All Township accounts must be paid in full and in good standing at the time of application.
  • Delivery: Once approved, additional carts are expected to be delivered within approximately 5–10 business days.
  • Cart Ownership: All waste carts remain the property of Waste Management and are subject to the Township's waste collection requirements.

How to Apply

Residents interested in obtaining an additional waste cart are required to complete and submit the Additional 64-Gallon Waste Cart Request Form to the Township of Howick.

Applications will be reviewed by Township staff to confirm eligibility prior to approval.

For more information or to submit your completed application, please contact the Municipal Office at 519-335-3208 ext. 105 or email reception@howick.ca.

Alternatively, residents may bring waste or recycling to the Howick Landfill, where a minimum disposal fee of $10 will apply once the scale is operational.

We strongly encourage residents to make full use of the curbside collection service provided. The new cart system will help keep garbage and recycling securely contained, reducing issues with animals, wind, and scattered debris, while also supporting more efficient and consistent collection.

Please complete this Additional Recycling Container Request Form | Circular Materials to apply for an additional container

Note, Circular Materials recommend that you use your current recycling container for a period of 90 days to determine your recycling needs before submitting a request for an additional container.

It is common for a residence to experience significant seasonal variability in recycling needs and increased volume over the holiday period. As a reminder, Blue Box materials, particularly cardboard, must be broken down and flattened to support using recycling container space most efficiently.

For residents who require a new recycling container for a newly built home, please note, your local community/municipality will advise Circular Materials of new builds in each local community which require residential services including garbage and recycling collection. A recycling container will be delivered to new residences upon this notification.

Automated collection means:

  • residents roll their wheeled carts to the roadside
  • a specially designed truck lifts and empties the cart
  • no manual lifting of bags or bins by collection crews

This system improves efficiency, consistency, and safety while maintaining the same collection frequency residents are used to.

Waste Management is transitioning from household waste bagged curbside collection to Wheeled Cart collection. This is being done to:

· Reduce exposure to prevent driver fatality.

· Decrease risk of driver injury.

· Increase productivity to reduce operational and labour costs and keep rates competitive. · Improve skilled driver retention and satisfaction

There are currently no plans to offer a refund or buy-back program for garbage bag tags. The Township is providing several months notice to residents in advance of getting garbage and recycling carts and phasing out garbage bag tags.

There is no additional cost for the carts. This is a service that is being provided by the Township through the annual operating budget, which includes the Waste Management Contract.

Each registered residential dwelling will receive one waste cart and one recycling cart. Commercial, industrial or institutional properties will receive one waste cart only. Additional carts are available to purchase at an additional cost.

Need extra bins for your apartment or multi-unit property? You or your landlord can submit a request to reception@howick.ca if the property qualifies.

Effective August 3, 2026, Recycling bins will not be accepted in your curbside recycling. Consider reusing it for storage or re-purposing it for another use.
